Last we talked about Tranexamic Acid and Azelaic Acid. Both acids help with hyperpigmentation spots. Today I’d like to talk about the third acid called Kojic Acid which is available over the counter.

  • Kojic Acid is a simple chelating organic acid and is freely soluble water and ethanol.
  • It is a byproduct in many fungi.
  • Shitake mushrooms are a rich source of Kojic Acid and are used a lot in Japanese cooking.
  • It is also a byproduct in the fermentation process of malting rice used in producing Saki, which is a Japanese rice wine.

Kojic Acid is good for:

  • Dark spots
  • Anti-bacteria
  • Anti-fungi

In my clinic I use it largely to help decrease dark spots.

It is a tyrosinase –decrease pigmentation production.

  • Skin Ceuticals Discoloration Defense serum combination between Kojic acid and Tranexamic Acid.
  • PCA skin pigment bar – good concentration of Kojic Acid.

These are two of my favorite to recommend.

  3. In our clinic we also have ReNew360 Premium Skincare Hydroquinone 6% / Kojic Acid Emulsion 4%.

How to use Kojic Acid:

  • 1-2% crème
  • Use once or twice a day as tolerated
  • Can be combined with other lightening agents
  • Use sunscreen daily

Topical Lightening Agents:

  • Kojic Acid
  • Azelaic Acid
  • Tranexamic Acid

I like to combine the three of them to help my patients have an even skin tone.
